The majority of the individuals responsible for this introduction were refugees, monks, and intellectuals from China who fled their homeland after the downfall of the Ming dynasty in 1644. Tea scholars have stated that the Sencha tradition of drinking tea has significantly contributed to the development of the Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, much like 'Chanoyu' or the 'Powdered Tea Ceremony.'
